I've always used rabbit ears and got good analog reception, but now I can't get some of the digital stations at all and the others don't always come in. Why?

Digital TV signals behave differently than analog signals.  They bounce off trees and buildings more, and are more sensitive to weather and atmospheric conditions.  You could try a different set of rabbit ears, or you may need to upgrade to a rooftop antenna.  Visit www.antennaweb.org or www.tvfool.com to find out which antenna is best for your area, and where to point your antenna for best reception.
